Doublehead (Jun 01, 2009 - Jul 12, 2011)
Doublehead (NHNEJNDH) Jackson, NH (USA) Lat,Long: 44.16674,-71.14476 Map Elevation: 2400 feet 42 species 2 trips (1 non-trip sighting)
The distinctive twin humps of Doublehead rise 1000' - 1500' above the adjacent heights of land on the ridge between the Wildcat River and the East Branch of the Saco northeast of Jackson. Lower slopes are mostly hardwood forest which yields to a mixture of red spruce, balsam fir and white birch on the top 700' or so of the mountain. Red spruce dominates the dry southerly and westerly slopes of the summit. The saddle and east slopes are more mature mixed spruce, fir, birch and maple. Ledges on top of the south peak offer good views in all directions except northeast. Two trails ascend the east side of the mountain from the Dundee road. The New Trail begins at a big clearing on the high point of the Dundee road while the Old Trail starts up in woods about a half mile down the hill towards Black Mountain.
