Cedar Cove (Jun 27, 2006 - Jun 29, 2006)
Cedar Cove (NLWCCC) W of Lark Harbor, NF (CAN) Lat,Long: 49.09235,-58.42368 Map 8 species 1 trip (0 non-trip sightings)
Cedar Cove is a shallow indentation on the West Coast a few miles S of the Bay of Islands, a wind-swept area of abrupt semi-barren hills separated by lowlands of boggy meadows and stunted woods. The cove fronts a wind-scoured notch between two cliff-lined headlands. A trail runs through the stunted forest along the base of the western headland to Cedar Cove from Little Harbor which is at the end of the road SW from Lark Harbor. Overlooking the cobbly beach and accumulated driftwood of the cove is a gravelly bench carpeted with grasses, stunted forbs and mats of common juniper and spruce which slopes gently back through a band of krummholz to a shallow pond. East of the pond bogs and grassy meadows extend back across the flats to Lark Harbor. Below the rough cliffs of the headland to the north a steep grass slope extends back from the cove to a scraggly fir forest striped by two prominent wind-kill bands; bleached fir skeletons along the trail across the base of the slope may mark the initial stages of a third band pursuing the other two up the hill.
