Red Rocks Recreation Area (Mar 16, 2008 - Mar 18, 2008)
Red Rocks Recreation Area (NVLVRCRA) Las Vegas, NV (USA) 11 species 1 trip (0 non-trip sightings)
The Red Rocks Canyon Recreation Area lies at the foot of the Spring Mountains just west of Las Vegas. Massive sandstone outcrops form a line of peaks and cliffs along the base of the limestone mountain range. Elevation ranges from 3800' to 7200'. Higher elevations support pinyon pine, juniper and even some ponderosa pine; lower elevations are desert scrub, lots of blackbrush. Scrubby as well as tree oaks grow in canyons and willows and other riparian shrubs along the wetter areas. Spectacular hikes in the area include Turtlehead Mountain, Bridge Mountain and Mount Wilson, along with somewhat easier hikes in the canyons between the big peaks. A fire burned much of the desert scrub in the valley in 2006 including some fine stands of Joshua trees.
