Shin Oak Observatory on the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is a gazebo situated at the end of a short walkway and surrounded by the scrubby oak (oak shinnery) habitat favored by the Black-capped Vireo. It is located along RM 1869 about 9 miles west of Liberty Hill. The area to the west was recently burned so the oak scrub is only a couple of feet tall. Taller oak scrub with a few other trees limits the view to the east.
