2013-05-14 08:10 for 3 hrs 30 mins (birding) 37 sightings Rattlesnake Ridge (WAKCRSRDG) North Bend, WA (USA) Lat,Long: 47.50897,-121.84155 Map Elevation: 2000 feet
Forested ridge which runs for 5 miles northwest from Rattlesnake Lake south of North Bend, rising from about 700' in the valley to 3200' at the high point midway along the ridge. Most of the old growth and much of the second growth forest has been clear cut over the past fifty years but some mature forest remains, particularly on the steep northeast side of the ridge. In addition to numerous forest roads, a trail runs from Winery Road off I-90 at exit 27 to Rattlesnake Lake, traversing mostly mixed broadleaf and coniferous forest of various ages with some variously brushy clearcut areas. Partly cloudy (CU), temp in the 50's, westerly breeze and chilly higher up.. David and I parked at the Winery Road trailhead off I-90 exit 27 and hiked 4 miles up the trail to the overlook, with a short out and back to Stan's Overlook.
A few patches of snow in the woods approaching and behind the upper overlook. Bird activity quieted down significantly after about 9:30AM. Sightings recorded in the field and submitted from BirdLog for Android v1.6.
Sooty Grouse 1   Calling, about 2.5 miles up the trail.
Northern Pygmy-Owl 3   Two seen together about 3 miles up the trail, possibly another heard calling in same area. Calls included a quick series of soft hoots ""tutututututututututututututu"", slightly lower in pitch than the usual call note and followed by a single typical hoot.
