Calispell Lake is a shallow lake a few miles SW of Usk surrounded by marshes and pastures in a 1x3 mile valley bounded by low conifer-forested hills. Though there is no public access to the lake, Bennett and Westside Calispell roads pass through a variety of habitats including coniferous forest, pastures, fields, marshes and riparian zones as they circumnavigate the valley. Partly cloudy, 57F, calm David and I parked at the bridge across South Fork Calispell Creek along with Tom Mansfield and two other birders and tried to photograph the singing Northern Waterthrush. Habitat is a lush riparian growth of cottonwood, alder, willow, red-osier dogwood and other shrubs with surrounding forest of Lodgepole pine and Douglas fir and other conifers.
