Westside Calispell - Aspens
2013-05-25 09:55 for 20 minutes (birding) 24 sightings Calispell Lake (WAPOCSPLK) Usk, WA (USA) Lat,Long: 48.28256,-117.34924 Map Elevation: 2100 feet
Calispell Lake is a shallow lake a few miles SW of Usk surrounded by marshes and pastures in a 1x3 mile valley bounded by low conifer-forested hills. Though there is no public access to the lake, Bennett and Westside Calispell roads pass through a variety of habitats including coniferous forest, pastures, fields, marshes and riparian zones as they circumnavigate the valley. Mostly cloudy, 57F, light breeze David and I parked along Westside Calispell Road at the bend in the road about 0.8 miles north/east of Pease Road to listen for the Least Flycatcher reported to nest in the grove of aspen in prior years.
No flycatcher. the pasture and the aspen grove are both well-grazed but birds still seem to to like the area. Adjacent habitats included un-mowed field, ponderosa pine and mixed coniferous forest, along with the marshes out towards the lake.
